The Intersection of Ethics and Internal Logistics 4.0: Insights and Recommendations from an AI-PROFICIENT Use Case

The paper ‘Ethical Internal Logistics 4.0: Observations and Suggestions from a Working Internal Logistics Case’ describes AI-PROFICIENT’s Use Case in heavy industry, which involves combining Optical Character Recognition (OCR) text recognition with algorithms to accurately identify labels for additives used in the production process.

Marc M. Anderson & Karën Fort from Université de Lorraine examine the ethical considerations related to how the new technology affects shop floor operators. In specific, they share their recommendations and the success they had in implementing them, arguing that many of the ethical issues stem from the uncritical acceptance of Industry 4.0 and Internal Logistics 4.0, as a generalized and idealized ‘plan’ to which technology and human operators must conform.

Last but not least, they contrast this by proposing an approach where the needs of the human in the work context guide and limit the development of Internal Logistics 4.0 as a series of gradual improvements tailored to the worker’s situation.
